US Embassy names Constance Tillotson as the Cultural Envoy to Sri Lanka propelling her “On-The-Set” Acting Camp to a Global Level.
Constance spent the summer directing her “On-The-Set” Acting Camp in the Maldives and in Sri Lanka. In the Maldives, she worked on a tiny island at a drug rehabilitation clinic. Her camp had 50 participants including 48 men and 2 women, all Muslim and recovering heroin addicts.  She taught them acting and writing.  They wrote screenplays, many of the stories speaking of the pain and struggle in their lives, and Constance then directed the 8 short films. The experience was so healing was so powerful and healing, Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassen called a meeting with Constance and invited her to be the only representative and the countries anti-drug summit. The films were premiered at the summit.

In Sri Lanka, the country is under reconstruction after the recent cease fire of its 25-year-civil war.  Thirty children from various regions and ethnic backgrounds participated in the 10-day Sri Lankan Film Camp. Constance taught them acting, writing, directing and editing. She was the very first American they had ever met. The camp was an important step in creating a new generation of children who were once viewed as enemies. The powerful films will be rewarded with a special premiere screening at the Galle Film Festival in December.

Constance has accepted the position of Cultural Envoy and will travel back in April to train other directors so that the camps can take place in several locations, allowing more children to benefit, bond and grow from the extraordinary elements created by the camp.

  By Constance Tillotson

Zen and the art of acting mixed with a little bit of basketball. That is the best way I can describe the method of the studio. We have open, very honest “life” discussions at the beginning of every class. The actors feel safe to speak about any issues and concerns they are experiencing in their lives. My philosophy is in acting and in life is there is no “right or wrong” choice instead lessons are meant to be learned by the choices one makes. It is within those lessons that stronger future choices and successes are born.

It’s within the ownership and examination of our own choices that uncovers and grants us our own truth.

You never know what words will impact a child. This is why, when I am with my little actors, I choose my words very carefully.  Frequent words and phrases one will hear in my studio are courageous, doubtless, warrior, beautiful, intelligent, strong, lovely, extraordinary, worth,  fight , visualize and believe you have the power to create the life you want to lead, from yourself do not take no for an answer, silence the mind, take power over all negative thoughts, do not answer with “I don’t know” as we all know, one just needs to take the time because the truth is always waiting.

Even the 6-year-olds understand these concepts.

I see a child as simply a soul and artist in a smaller form. When I am with my actors I never limit my own vocabulary nor do I ever consider they are incapable of receiving the depth of my message.

From my own actor within, I respect and regard them as peers.  And this is exactly how they will be regarded when they create the opportunity to work with the high caliber of actor as a Meryl Streep or Daniel Day Lewis.

It’s important they learn now how to create an equal artistic partnership now so they will then view themselves worthy to share the screen with an internationally famous actor who has 30 years and many Oscars of experience over them.

This way their “fear of the unknown” will not kick in causing them to sabotage a rare opportunity.

My actors understand it is their job to bring their game. This is the only way they will be emotionally available to make the other actor better.  Just as tiny Dakota did with giants Sean Penn, Robert DeNiro and Denzel Washington.

Acting is not about an age it’s about the positive development of the artistic spirit.

It is my steadfast goal to contribute to the creation of a new generation of powerful, compassionate, grateful, emotionally healthy actors who are free from false limitations imposed by the mind. Actors who wish success for each other. Actors who  always have the courage to walk into any room and, no matter who else is sitting in it, will not give up their internal God given power.  Actors who understand when strength is earned no one can take it away.

Life is much too short too grand too wondrous to live in fear and hesitation. One must be taught that each individual was born with a valuable gift to contribute.  Life is about having the entitlement to unwrap one’s own gifts.
